Tofu Bacon

Strips of crispy tofu bacon.

Total Time: 50 min

Yields: 4-6 servings

This Tofu Bacon recipe is a game-changer for plant-based breakfasts and sandwiches. Thinly sliced, marinated, and then fried or baked to crispy perfection, it's a delicious and satisfying substitute for traditional bacon. The marinade, with its blend of tamari, liquid smoke, and spices, gives the tofu a deep, savory flavor.

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Slice the Tofu
    • Drain and press the tofu to remove as much water as possible.
    • Using a bread knife or mandolin, cut the tofu block into thin strips. The ridges from a bread knife can help the tofu absorb more flavor.
  2. Marinate the Tofu
    • In a bowl, mix together tamari, vegetable oil, liquid smoke, nutritional yeast, smoked paprika, ground black pepper, garlic powder, and maple syrup.
    • Place the sliced tofu into a ziplock bag and pour the marinade over it.
    • Close the bag tightly and shake to ensure all slices are well coated.
    • Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for best results. Shake the bag occasionally to redistribute the marinade.
  3. Cook the Tofu Bacon (Frying Method)
    • Heat 1 tablespoon of butter or neutral oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry the tofu slices for about 5 minutes, flipping halfway through, until crispy.
    • Add more marinade to the pan if it gets dry.
  4. Cook the Tofu Bacon (Baking Method)
    • Preheat your oven to 425°F (215°C).
    • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
    • Arrange the marinated tofu slices on the sheet in a single layer.
    • Brush with any leftover marinade.
    • Bake for about 25 minutes, or until a deep brown color, checking halfway through.
    • Adjust cooking time based on the thickness of the slices to avoid overcooking. The bacon will crisp up as it cools.
  5. Serve
    • Once the tofu bacon is crispy, remove it from the skillet or oven.
    • Serve immediately as a side or in your favorite dishes!
